Free Pistol is one of the oldest handgun events, and it's PURE BULLSEYE. Officially, it is shot at 50 metres, outdoors, with a .22. Got it? Put up your target, back up until you can no longer see it, then open fire with the smallest thing you've got. Free Pistols are specialized handguns that are almost free of restrictions by the competition rules. It has to be .22 rimfire and have open sights. It must be fired with one hand(the same hand the holds it(so no remote control ideas). It can have any barrel length, and any grip that supports only the hand. Glove grips are common. There is no minimum trigger weight. Indoors, we shoot Free Pistol on 20 yard targets that have a 10 ring about the size of a finger tip. Ten shots to a target and about 15 minutes for each of six targets. It takes a couple of hours to shoot 60 competition shots. On Wednesday, January 20, a Free Pistol match will be run for OVPL clubs. The RA is the host range. Mike Taylor is the organizer. His notice of the shoot follows. FREE PISTOL Under the auspices of the Ottawa Valley Pistol League, a series of monthly matches will be held to stimulate interest in and to provide a local venue for this ISU discipline. The inaugural match will be held at the RA range Wednesday, 20 January 1999 commencing at 7:15pm Each OVPL club is invited to submit a team. A team may consist of up to four members. The aggregate of the three highest scores from each team will be the team score. Since time and space are limited, it may be necessary to shoot an abbreviated course of fire if participation is such as to require two relays. Such a `short' course would be 40 shots for record, fired in 5 periods of 12 minutes each (not including target changing). With this format, a complete relay should take about an hour and a half; and two relays could be accommodated in an evening. Michael Taylor (RA Gun Club) will act as series coordinator. Please advise him if your club will be sending a team to the inaugural match. Ph: 613-831-0143 (home) Ph: 613-592-5851 (work) FAX 613-836-3266 e-mail: fmtaylor@compmore.net
